Well, Linux Mint 12 has released and Clem and gang have expressed their need to make the move to Gnome 3, in order to keep the compatibility with Ubuntu and that they held onto Gnome 2x longer than most others but that it was important to ease users into the change to Gnome 3. To that end, Clem et. al. has Mintified Gnome 3 with elements of Gnome 2x, using MATE, a fork dreamed up by a lone programmer who apparently hated Gnome 3 as much as the rest of us haters. Clem has taken a crafty and sensible approach, easing in the new Gnome 3 features while keeping some Gnome 2x features, thereby allowing at least one release to slide into the Gnome 3 experience. Note the standings of Linux Mint, which has now taken the number one spot on the DistroWatch ranking. Apparently, from what I’m reading and from the brief test of Unity, said Unity blows and people are fleeing the sinking ship. I myself couldn’t stand Unity and I’m not much bigger of a fan of Gnome 3 (I thought it sucked marginally less than Unity) so now as a longtime Gnome user, I’m finding myself in a dilemma, thinking for the first time since using Linux that it may be time to rethink KDE. I have enjoyed XFCE but to me, it just feels like a Gnome that fell off the short bus. I know it’s not, but it ‘feels’ that way…anyway, I’m currently downloading MEPIS 11 to see if I, in any way, can rethink the KDE desktop. We shall see.

What I wanted on my speed dial was a custom pic I put up of Norman Reedus (who plays Daryl Dixon on the AMC TV show, the Walking Dead) Hey, who doesn’t look badass holding a crossbow? Anyway, my problem was/is the stupid speed dial boxes snap to a central grid, meaning they can’t be moved, like say..desktop icons. Irritating, as Norman’s delightfully delicious face was being covered by speed dial boxes. So here is the hacked up-stupid-shouldn’t be necessary but was-workaround way I fixed it. Here is my result: a theme I like, with Reedus’ yummy face clearly visible. I know what you’re thinking..how are those speed dial boxes on the left like that? Muhahaha!

First, I downloaded (for my viewing pleasure) a couple of themes that I liked that had transparency on the speed dial.

1. IBIS inspire Transparent 3.81b (Screenshot)
2. Ultra Glass Static 2-v.7.50
3. Aesthetical & Classy 2

Then I copied them to my desktop and unpacked them. The part that drove me nuts were throbbers in the speed dial boxes. So I located those in the anims files of the skins and opened them with GIMP, and deleted the throbber pic out of the image.

Then I re-saved the blank .png. Once I did that I simply repacked all the files with the same name.zip as before and put them back in the /skins folder. Reopen Opera and there are now plain transparent speed dial boxes (when you make new blank ones I should clarify)

To get the exact look of the speed dial boxes ‘grid’ placement that I have (boxes to the left or boxes to the right) requires creating ‘blanks’ These speed dial boxes are going to have the address opera: in them..that’s it. that will get a transparent, rather than white, box.

Then you will have speed dial boxes with no website comment names and blank ones that will only be visible as a tiny little x in case you wish to close the speed dial box out entirely. Remember, depending on the focus of your picture and how many speed dials you use, you will have to experiment with how many columns you will need. I also cleaned house on my speed dials. I had several I didn’t use but I imagine I will end up replacing them with new ones

This post is in specific response to one of my readers, who is looking to dual boot Windows 7 and Debian Linux. Here are the steps I used to set up the bootloader when I dual booted Windows 7 Starter and Meego Linux on my Acer netbook.

I followed these steps posted by ‘ecardinal’ (thank you!) in the Meego Linux forum who was doing the exact same dual boot install as I was. Results may vary. All I can say is that it worked for me.

“ Make sure you have a Windows Repair disk (not a backup or factory restore/recovery, see “http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Create-a-system-repair-disc”). You will need it later and you won’t be able to make one at that time unless you have a second Windows system! Since my netbook did not come with a built-in CD/DVD drive, I have installed it on a bootable thumb drive (“http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-repair-windows-7-from-usb-flash-drive-repair-without-installation-dvd-disc/”).

Get and install the EasyBCD utility from “neosmart.net”. This will let you easily add the Meego option to the Windows 7 bootloader and includes the very cool NeoGrub utility (more on this later).

Put the Meego image on a CD or USB drive (you may need to adjust your BIOS settings) and install Meego with the ‘unused space’ option. Reboot when it asks and it will go back into Meego and finish the install. Shut down when it has finished and shows the desktop (press the power button and choose ‘Turn off’).
Boot from the Windows 7 Repair disc, select the “Startup Repair” option — nothing else! Reboot when it’s done and you should be back in Windows 7.

Start EasyBCD and click “Add New Entry”. Select the “NeoGrub” tab (NeoGrub is an offshoot of Grub4Dos). You can change the name of the new BCD entry if you want; click “Install”. (NOTE: Yes, there is a SYSLINUX option under the Linux tab in the EasyBCD 2.1 Beta, but this just gave me a “Boot Error” when I tried it.) When the NeoGrub install is finished click “Configure”. In the editor (Notepad) that starts up, add the following:

timeout 10
default 0
title Meego
root (hd0,3)
chainloader +1

Here’s what this means:

timeout 10 — the number of seconds to wait before booting (ten in this example). If this is the only additional OS besides windows, you can set this to zero and it will skip the menu.

default 0 — the default ‘title’ entry to boot, counting from zero.

title Meego — an arbitrary label.

root (hd0,3) — If you understand grub device partition numbering then you probably already know what goes here. For everyone else, this is a bit tricky so read carefully. This line tells the NeoGrub bootloader where to find the EXTLINUX boot partition installed along with Meego. Note that the numbering scheme is not the same as standard Linux device numbering (e.g., “/dev/hda2″). If you just want to guess, try (hd0,3). If it fails to boot try (hd0,4) because you might have a hidden ‘rescue’ partition. There is an reasonable way to guess at what goes here — but it might not always work, particularly if you have more than one disk or have previously messed with the partitions yourself. First, the disk number number after ‘hd’ and before the comma should probably be zero (unless you boot from a hard disk other than the first). To find the partition number (the number after the comma), in Windows click the Start button and in the “Search programs and files” box enter “diskmgmt.msc”. In the disk diagram for your hard disk (not the list on top!), look for a smallish partition (mine is 250MB) to the right of the “C:” drive. Find the partition number by counting from left to right, starting with one. In many stock Windows machines this will be 3 and in some it will be 4 (as in my case). If it does not work, Google “grub device partition number” and read the docs. You might need to experiment at the grub command line or boot with a different Linux (I like Puppy) and use something like gparted to determine your disk geometry.

chainloader +1 — this tells the bootloader to let the ‘root’ partition boot however it wants to. Trying to boot Meego directly with grub caused a kernel panic in mid-boot so I wanted a way to let Meego boot with EXTLINUX as designed. Using a chainloader allows Meego’s EXTLINUX do all the heavy lifting.

Restart (power off — don’t hibernate!) and you should see you shiny new Windows Boot menu including Meego.

PERSONAL NOTES: (from Pariah)

I didn’t have a rescue disk..I have a rescue partition and that worked just fine.

You have to install the BCD utility on Windows before you continue.

Step 4 didn’t go quite that way. I had to restart the computer a couple of times after installing Meego to get it to boot into Windows and then the rescue partition takes over. This takes quite some time FYI. Once back into Windows then you can run the Easy BCD.

I can’t remember if mine was hd0,3 or hd0,4..I do remember that I was wrong the first time and had to go back and redo it, no problem though.

In case this doesn’t get fixed in the final version of Opera 11.10, here is the fix for the giant speed dial boxes that scroll, thereby defeating the purpose of speed dial in the first place. In the address box type the following with no spaces about:config Then, in the search box, type speed dial, which will bring up the speed dial config section under user prefs box, there are some options: number of columns, speed dial file, state, etc. Under speed dial zoom level, lower the amount from 100% to about 70%. This will make it look about like before. Enjoy!

The other day was quite the adventure when I decided to dual boot Meego Linux on my new Acer netbook that came with Windows 7 Starter. By the way that is the worst OS EVER! I repartitioned and installed Meego only to discover that upon reboot, it would only boot into Meego. No bootloader! Grrr! So I finally get back into Windows only to have it reinstall from the backup partition! So then it would only boot into Windows…after googling I found one person doing the same install as me and posted a tutorial. Unfortunately the steps didn’t work for me. So, to see if the problem was universal I installed Ubuntu Netbook edition. Bootloader worked fine..unfortunately I despised UNE. So I took that off and rebooted…to have a grub error!!! More googling got a quick fix for that..back into Windows..then to reinstall Meego cuz I really like it. So then I got back into windows, just to have it run the repair again..ugh..then I downloaded a program to make a bootloader..after reinstalling Meego again..thank goodness it’s fast..and I was able to create a bootloader that actually worked! So now I am happily using Meego, while keeping Windblows to use just for updating my daughters Nokia phone.

I got a new modem today (yay!) after the old Motorola one I had was slower than dirt..okay I dropped it a couple of times. So now I have this new 2wire modem/router dealie thingie and it even came with instructions that were oh-so-simple to use. After (literally) 3 minutes I was up and going again.

So I was enjoying my faster connection when I tried to update my Mint system. So imagine my surprise when I get this output:

W: Failed to fetch http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/dists/lucid/Release.gpg Something wicked happened resolving ‘archive.canonical.com:http’ (-5 – No address associated with hostname)

W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/am-monkeyd/nautilus-elementary-ppa/ubuntu/dists/lucid/Release.gpg Something wicked happened resolving ‘ppa.launchpad.net:http’ (-5 – No address associated with hostname)

W: Failed to fetch http://packages.medibuntu.org/dists/lucid/Release.gpg Something wicked happened resolving ‘packages.medibuntu.org:http’ (-5 – No address associated with hostname)

E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

“Something wicked?” Well, that’s a new one. I have on occasion had to go and manually update keys for Opera or another 3rd party repository but I have never had this problem with the main Ubuntu repos. I figured immediately that something about my new modem wasn’t quite right so I googled and in the wonderful Ubuntu Help Forums, I found the answer..so here’s the steps to follow:

EITHER click on Control Center (from the menu) and click Network Connections or right click on the NetworkManager Applet and click on Edit connections. (2 ways to get to the same place)

For a wired connection: highlight the name of the connection (e.g. Auto eth0) and click edit. Click on the IPv4 tab.

Change the method from Automatic (DHCP) to Automatic (DHCP) addresses only. At the bottom, enter in the 3rd party DNS server. An easy example is Google. Theirs is 8.8.8.8 Just enter the part I put in bold in the DNS servers box (if there is two addresses, separate them with a comma). Click apply.

A great place to get a 3rd party DNS is through OpenDNS. Use them and you can get a free account, which comes with some nice safety features. All you have to do is go to OpenDNS Basic and follow their easy instructions..don’t forget to check your email for the confirmation link. Many features won’t work til you confirm the account.
